The Registry Mechanic
Review
Registry Mechanic
is one of the market leaders when it comes to Windows registry
repair programs, and has been developed by PCTools, one of the
most respected of software development companies. It is a
popular product, and along with many other products from the
company, receives a great deal of attention. As such we felt
that it was well worth a close examination of its abilities and
thus this Registry
Mechanic review has been undertaken.
Our Overall Score – 85%
The Registry Mechanic
Details
-
Software Designer – PCTools has
designed and marketed Registry Mechanic. The
company itself has been around for a number of
years, and in that time has gained an excellent
reputation. Other software releases though have not
met the standards expected of the company, and
complaints have become more prevalent as their
products take up large amounts of computer memory.
-
Compatibility – Registry Mechanic
certify that the registry cleaner will work on
Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT, XP Pro, XP and Vista.
-
Features and Functions – Registry
Mechanic comes with a number of additional features
–
-
-
Back-up and Restore – the
Windows registry can be backed up quite
easily before Registry Mechanic undertakes
any form of repair.
-
Deep Scan – Registry
Mechanic is very through in its work and
will undertake a scan of all areas of the
registry.
-
System Optimisation –
there are additional features built in to
the program designed to make the whole
computer work more efficiently.
-
Ignore List – a list of
registry entries can be created so that
they will not be scanned in future running
of Registry Mechanic. This will preserve
essential files, as well as making a scan
much quicker.
-
Scheduling – Registry
Mechanic can be scheduled to run at future
sates, and it can also be run every time a
computer is started up.
The Test Results
Registry Mechanic is available from a number of internet sites,
including the official PCTools website. There is also a free
trial version available that allow a free scan of the registry
to be undertaken. The full version is only available as a paid
program, although it is very easy to install from a small
downloaded file.
Once installed, we found that Registry Mechanic
was very easy to navigate around, and the experience is
enhanced by a colourful and clear interface. The nature of the
interface though can become complex if you are looking for more
than the basic features. The basic scan though is thorough and
was able to locate issues missed by other registry cleaners.
The scan itself was quick, although we have been a bit confused
by the additional deep scan. We are unsure of its exact
purpose. After the scan was completed, the results were clearly
listed, and we were able to pick and choose whether to repair
all elements, or just ones we chose. In most cases you are
going to want to repair everything, although it does serve a
purpose for more experienced computer users.
Additional Observations
Our Registry Mechanic reviews shows how the cleaner comes with
some additional features that are quite nice although though do
not add that much value. The registry compactor doesn’t appear
to make that much difference to the overall size of the
registry, although the Start-up Manager can noticeable improve
the computer speed, especially during start-up.
Many of the other additional features also
already come with the Windows operating system so we are unsure
why they need to be added to this program.
Overall Impressions
It is obvious through our own testing why registry Mechanic has
achieved its reputation as one of the best Windows registry
cleaners available. It is certainly quick and thorough,
although there are problems as well.
Our Registry Mechanic review shows the program
takes up more memory space than its leading rivals, this makes
it difficult to use if it is being run on an older machine.
Registry Mechanic also runs in the background even when it is
not needed. A good registry cleaner only need to run once a
fortnight, so there is no point in continual scanning. These
failures bring down what is a good product.
For this reason we still believe that
RegCure from ParetoLogic is
the best registry repair
program around. More information can be found as to why
we make this judgement from our RegCure review.
